Intent of our English Curriculum
At Manor Primary School we teach English to make sure our pupils learn to speak and write fluently so that they can communicate their ideas and emotions to others and through their reading and listening, others can communicate with them.
Our pupils are encouraged to read for pleasure and to read widely. Comprehensions skills are taught explicitly in guided reading sessions and applied so that pupils can access the wider curriculum. We use the Letters and Sounds Phonics programme alongside an investigative approach in order to teach phonics through a rich reading curriculum. The children are heard reading individually and in groups and a reading buddy system is also used. A new school library has been developed which gives the pupils the opportunity to experience high quality texts.
We develop writing skills so that pupils have the stamina and ability to write at the age related standard. Children are supported to be independent writers through a wide range of activities including drama and role play, modelled and shared writing, film, imagery and high quality texts. The writing lessons are structured by using a boxed success criteria which allows children to understand the different genres and purposes of writing. We have high expectation of handwriting which is taught discretely and incorporated into phonics and spelling lessons.
