INTENT

Our aim is to provide a high quality music education that engages and inspires pupils to develop a love of music and nurtures their talent as musicians.
Through our scheme (Charanga Musical School) and work in other subjects, pupils have the opportunity to perform, listen to, review and evaluate music across a range of historical periods, genres, styles and traditions. They learn to sing and to use their voices, to create and compose music on their own and with others.

We teach them to listen and to appreciate different forms of music across different time periods, cultures and traditions. This supports children to understand the cultural capital of being open minded in their listening as well as knowledgeable about a breadth of musical genres in the world today. 

IMPLEMENTATION

At Manor Primary School, we use Charanga to support our music teaching. This is an online music scheme which provides lots of visual aids and interactive resources to ensure children continually develop their skills and knowledge.

Children use tuned and untuned instruments and engage in practical music lessons. Children are taught about the interrelated dimensions of music from the beginning of the scheme, ensuring they are able to use a variety of skills and are provided with the correct musical terminology. This builds as the children make progress and by the end of the scheme children are able to use this vocabulary confidently.

Each Unit of Work comprises of strands of musical learning which correspond with the National Curriculum for Music:

   3. Singing
   4. Playing instruments
   5. Improvisation
   6. Composition
3. Performing

The music curriculum ensures pupils sing, listen, play, perform and evaluate.

This is embedded in the classroom activities as well as the weekly singing assemblies, various performances and the learning of instruments.

The Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) follows the ‘Development Matters in the EYFS’ guidance which aims for children to develop knowledge and skills related to ‘Expressive Arts and Design’ through broad exploration of the following aspects; Exploring and Using Media and Materials and Being Imaginative.

Singing is important in our curriculum, with a 25 minute singing assembly taking place for the whole school once a week as well as being a key part of curriculum music lessons.  Singing is an inclusive activity and this plays a big part in support the Mental Health and Wellbeing of the children.

What you will see in a Manor Music Lesson:

• Engaging and inspiring lessons that promote creativity and curiosity.
• Children are given the opportunity to practise skills in a variety of ways with each lesson building upon prior learning.
• High quality instruction and questioning: based upon the Charanga scheme, teachers provide planned sequenced and modelled lessons and modelling of skills and techniques that build on children’s knowledge and skills.
• Achievement and Inclusion for all: All activities are planned, scaffolded and adapted where needed to ensure every child at Manor can achieve in Music. This may include adapted resources, adult support and awareness of physical/sensory needs.
• Practical instrumental and/or vocal activities in lessons.
• Frequent opportunities for children to discuss and review their learning.
• Retrieval of previous learning and explicit links that connect new learning with what the children already know.
• An emphasis on correct and ambitious vocabulary.  
• High quality verbal feedback during lessons
• Floor books gather evidence of lessons

IMPACT

 Progress in our curriculum is measured by children knowing more and remembering more.

The impact of our teaching in Music is measured using formative assessments throughout the year based on progress towards the objectives of the National curriculum and the Year Group skills and knowledge set out in the Charanga Passports for each child.
